Howdy, I’m Madiegan!

I’m a film photographer from Utah! I’m completely self-taught and absolutely underqualified, but that’s what makes my portfolio so interesting!

I started doing film photography over a year ago when I stumbled into The FIND Lab in Provo. Before that moment, I had been taking very unique (bad) photos on my beloved Kodak Pixpro AZ252 and occasionally on a disposable film camera. When I walked into The Find Lab, I was met with a wall of film, a wall of film cameras, and very cool people, and in that moment, I decided that I was going to be a film photographer! I mean how hard could it be? I walked out with a Holga 120N and a roll of Lomography 800. I then proceeded to walk around Provo, taking pictures with a camera that I didn’t quite understand, and have been taking photos on film ever since.

It took a lot of mistakes to get where I am today. Going from accidental double exposures, to opening up the film door before I rewound my film, to ripping my film in half, to finally being able to expose and edit photos was a long and trying process. I couldn’t have grown so much without the help of the film community, Reddit and Quora answering my questions, and my friends and family posing for my never-ending projects.

All of these things have made me the kind of photographer I am today. I am up for the challenge and will seriously take a photo of anything. My ultimate goal as a photographer isn’t to make my portfolio recognizable; my goal is to make my subjects feel seen and beautiful. Photography isn’t a job to me (it’s way too expensive to be a job), it’s a way of speaking without using words.
